First quarterly report 2023 on the evolution of the national online gambling market in Spain

(Spain).- The Spanish General Directorate for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ in its original) which regulates Spanish online gambling, published on Tuesday 27 June the first quarterly report of the year.

First quarterly report 2023 on the evolution of the national online gambling market in Spain

The report, which includes data from January to March 2023, it is observed that the quarterly GGR stands at almost 304.92 million euros, causing a reduction compared to the quarter of the previous year. In this case, the decrease is around -2.76% compared to the fourth quarter of 2022, when the World Cup was held in Qatar.

The increase in GGR in this first quarter of 2023 is almost 51% (50.96%) compared to the first quarter of 2022. 

Regarding the rest of the main figures, something that is repeated in the rest of the main magnitudes, where deposits and withdrawals of players remain with a clear upward trend in annual computation, although they reflect an almost identical figure compared to the previous quarter.

In the analysis of the GGR by game segments the higlights data is that casino games (slot machines and live roulette) continue to account for almost 50% of the GGR generated in the sector. Specifically, of the €304.92 million GGR, €130.60 million is generated in Betting (42.83%); €3.35 million in Bingo (1.10%); €143.36 million in Casino (47.02%), €0.25 million in Contests (0.08%) and €27.36 million in Poker (8.97%).

The betting segment has a rate of decrease compared to the previous quarter of -7.65% and an increase of 100.10% compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Conventional sports betting decreased by -11.21% and live betting by -6.11% compared to the previous quarter. Equestrian matched betting decreased by -5.92% and other matched betting increased by 37.76%.

Bingo experienced a decrease of -7.40% compared to the previous quarter and -6.62% compared to the same quarter of 2022.

In the casino segment, there was a growth of 0.64% compared to Q4 2022 and a positive annual rate of change of 29.19%. This year-on-year growth was 31.29% for slot machines and 32.19% for live roulette. Compared to the previous quarter, the rate of increase was 1.23% for slot machines and 0.33% for live roulette, while conventional roulette decreased by -3.81%.

Bankruptcies show an increase of 730.40% in this quarter and a decrease of -4.89% in annual variation rate. This segment presents an irregular behaviour with annual variation rates in the first quarter of 99.50% in 2020; -7.59% in 2021; -85.15% in 2022.

In the first quarter of 2023, poker shows an increase of 5.01% compared to the previous quarter and 24.92% compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Compared to the previous quarter, tournament poker increased by 8.42% while cash poker decreased by -2.72%. The annual rates of change are positive, 32.06% and 9.93% respectively.

Marketing spend in the quarter was €93.30 million, broken down into affiliate spend €11.86 million; sponsorship €1.22 million; promotions €50.19 million; and advertising €30.03 million. Compared to the previous quarter, this expenditure decreased by -13.08% and -0.81% year-on-year. Advertising shows negative rates compared to the previous quarter and year of -22.79% and -12.75% respectively. 

Spending on affiliates decreased by -19.90% compared to the previous quarter and increased by 32.45% compared to the previous year. Spending on sponsorship decreased by -30.48% from the previous quarter and increased by 93.18% YoY. Promotions decreased by -3.26% compared to the previous quarter and increased by 0.27% compared to the previous year. In this quarter, promotions are broken down into bonuses released in prizes of €13.33 million and not included in prizes of €36.86 million.

The monthly average number of active gaming accounts is 1,158,628, which implies a decrease of -2.57% compared to the previous quarter and a positive annual variation of 11.06%. The monthly average of new accounts is 111,390 users, with a quarterly decrease of -15.78% and -2.68% annual rate.

Of the 78 licensed operators, the following operators have had operations during the first quarter of 2023 for each of the gaming segments:

Contests: 2
Poker: 9
